Seneca A5 Notebook
This was the basic notebook: A5, plain, modular, and made to be used rather than admired.
The old description called it a minimalist classic. That is probably still right. It was built around a few simple parts:
- Texon covers
- aluminium rings
- four dividers
- replaceable A5 pages
- enough structure to start, but not enough to get in the way
The design goal was not luxury. It was usefulness.
Covers
The covers were made from 0.8 mm Texon, a nonwoven material made from latex-bonded cellulose fibres. It is normally used in the shoe industry as a leather substitute, for example in insoles.
That sounds less romantic than leather. Good.
It feels somewhere between paper and textile. It has enough dimensional stability to work as a cover, and enough flexibility to avoid feeling like a hard binder. It is also more tear-resistant than it looks.
Rings
The aluminium rings make the notebook modular. Pages can be moved around without destroying the book. That is the whole point.
A fixed notebook is a timeline. A discbound notebook is closer to a small working archive.
Dividers
The default setup used four dividers. The old shop text suggested a simple structure:
- To do
- Doing
- Done
- Page supply
That is not a bad starting point. It is almost too obvious, which is usually a good sign.
A notebook system should not need a manual before the first page can be used.
What I still like about it
The useful part is the balance:
- physical, but rearrangeable
- simple, but not disposable
- structured, but not over-designed
- handmade, but not precious
The notebook is just a tool. The process around it is the actual system.
Questions for the next version
- What ring size is large enough without making the notebook clumsy?
- Which divider set survives real use?
- Should page templates be printed, stamped, or left blank?
- How much structure is helpful before it becomes annoying?
- What should be archived, and what should simply be thrown away?
